Elias Henry Jones was an administrator and author.

Born at Aberystwyth on 21 September 1883, the eldest son of Sir Henry Jones and Annie Walker. He was educated at Glasgow University, the University of Grenoble and Balliol College, Oxford. After being called to the Bar, he passed the Indian Civil Service administrative grade examinations, and in 1905 went to serve in Burma.

During the First World War he enlisted with the Indian Army and served in Mesopotamia. He was taken prisoner after the fall of Kut-el-Amra and he was one of many who walked the 700 miles from Anatolia, Turkey, to the prisoner of war camp at Yozgad – one in seven of the prisoners who stared the march died before reaching Yozgad. His time at the Yozgad camp, and his attempts to escape by feigning insanity are told in The Road to En-dor.

Jones returned to Burma after the War and in 1922, when he was the Financial Commissioner, he retired and settled back in Bangor with his family. For the next ten years he was actively interested in the movement for international peace and in Welsh education. From 1927 to 1933 he was editor of The Welsh Outlook. In 1933 he was appointed registrar of the University College of North Wales, a post which he held until his death on 22 December 1942.
